Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of excavators, motor graders, and other heavy equipment to support roadway, bridge, drainage, utility, and earthwork construction. The operator performs excavation, grading, and material handling activities while ensuring all work is completed in accordance with project plans, quality standards, and company safety policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate excavators, motor graders, and other heavy construction equipment.
- Perform excavation, grading, earthwork, drainage installation, utility work, embankment construction, and roadway preparation.
- Excavate and fine grade to required elevations and tolerances using grade stakes, GPS machine control, laser systems, or survey guidance.
- Construct and maintain roadway subgrades, shoulders, slopes, ditches, embankments, haul roads, and drainage features.
- Install and backfill culverts, storm drainage systems, utility crossings, and other underground infrastructure.
- Load haul trucks efficiently while maintaining safe operating practices.
- Assist with demolition, site preparation, and paving support operations as required.
- Coordinate daily activities with supervisors, survey crews, spotters, and other field personnel.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and perform routine maintenance, including fueling, lubrication, and cleaning.
- Report equipment deficiencies and maintenance needs promptly.
- Maintain production while ensuring work meets project specifications and quality standards.
- Follow all traffic control requirements and maintain safe work zones when operating near live traffic.
- Comply with OSHA regulations, TxDOT specifications, and all company safety policies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Experience operating excavators, motor graders, or other heavy equipment in heavy civil or highway construction.
- Ability to read construction plans, grade stakes, and survey information.
- Experience with GPS machine control systems preferred.
- Knowledge of excavation, grading, drainage, and roadway construction practices.
- Familiarity with TxDOT specifications and safety requirements preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and extended hours as needed.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a construction team.
