Position Summary
Unified Specialties is seeking skilled Industrial Bridge Painters / Blasters to support structural steel bridge painting and coating operations.
This is a hands-on field position responsible for all phases of the bridge coating process, including mobilization, containment, abrasive blasting, surface preparation, coating application, abrasive recovery, equipment maintenance, cleanup, and demobilization. Painter/Blasters are expected to work throughout the entire operation rather than performing only blasting or painting duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with mobilization and demobilization of blasting, painting, containment, ventilation, and support equipment
- Install, maintain, modify, and tear down bridge containment systems
- Set up and operate air compressors, blast pots, abrasive blasting equipment, dust collectors, industrial vacuums, ventilation systems, and related equipment
- Perform abrasive blasting of structural steel to remove existing coatings, rust, mill scale, and other contaminants
- Prepare structural steel surfaces to required cleanliness and surface profile specifications
- Inspect blasted surfaces and identify areas requiring additional preparation
- Recover, collect, and properly handle spent abrasive and blasting debris
- Prepare and mix industrial coatings according to manufacturer and project requirements
- Apply primers, intermediate coats, and finish/topcoats using airless spray equipment, brushes, and rollers
- Perform stripe coating on welds, bolts, edges, connections, and other specified areas
- Assist with monitoring coating coverage and wet-film and dry-film thickness (DFT)
- Identify coating defects, missed areas, overspray, contamination, and other deficiencies and perform necessary touch-up work
- Set up, clean, troubleshoot, and maintain blasting and painting equipment
- Maintain containment systems during blasting and painting operations
- Load, unload, stage, organize, and transport equipment and materials throughout the jobsite
- Work from scaffolding, aerial lifts, bridge platforms, suspended platforms, and other elevated access systems
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas
- Assist crew members as needed to safely and efficiently complete project activities
- Follow all Company and project-specific safety, environmental, fall protection, respiratory protection, PPE, and containment requirements
Qualifications & Requirements
- Previous industrial painting, abrasive blasting, structural steel coating, or bridge painting experience preferred
- Experience with abrasive blasting and/or airless spray equipment preferred
- Working knowledge of surface preparation, industrial coating application, and structural steel cleaning requirements preferred
- Willing and able to perform all phases of bridge coating operations, including containment, blasting, painting, abrasive recovery, cleanup, and equipment handling
- Ability to follow coating specifications, manufacturer requirements, and supervisor direction
- Ability to recognize acceptable surface preparation and coating quality
- Ability to safely operate and maintain industrial blasting and painting equipment
- Ability and willingness to work at heights and within bridge containment systems
- Ability to work effectively as part of a crew in physically demanding conditions
- Dependable, safety-conscious, and able to maintain productive work throughout the shift
Preferred Certifications
Certifications are not required for this position; however, the following certifications or equivalent industry credentials are preferred:
- NCCER Industrial Bridge Painter Certification
- AMPP CAS Level 2
- AMPP/SSPC C7 – Abrasive Blaster
- AMPP/SSPC C12 – Spray Applicator
- AMPP/SSPC C6 – Surface Preparation and Coating Application
Candidates with relevant industrial bridge painting or blasting experience are encouraged to apply even if they do not currently hold these certifications.
Safety & Medical Requirements
- Must be able to wear respirators, blasting hoods, protective clothing, fall-protection equipment, hearing protection, and other required PPE
- Must be able to meet applicable respiratory protection requirements, including required medical clearance and fit testing
- Must be willing and able to participate in Blood Lead Level (BLL) testing and applicable medical surveillance based on job duties and potential occupational lead exposure
- Must comply with all Company, project-specific, OSHA, environmental, and safety requirements
Physical & Work Requirements
- Frequent lifting, carrying, climbing, bending, kneeling, pulling and handling hoses, shoveling, blasting, coating application, and vacuuming
- Ability to work for extended periods while wearing required PPE and respiratory protection
- Ability to work at elevated heights from scaffolding, aerial lifts, bridge platforms, and suspended platforms
- Work is primarily performed outdoors and may involve heat, cold, humidity, noise, dust, abrasive blasting media, coating fumes, traffic, heavy equipment, and confined or limited work areas
- Days, nights, weekends, overtime, and travel may be required based on project needs
